Banjarmasin, the capial of South Kalimantan has been named the Venice of the Orient due to its many waterways. It is a starting point to a range of interesting wildlife, nature and cultural sights in Kalimantan. Key attractions and sights in Banjarmasin include the Pasar Terapung, the floating market, which is usually open in the early morning, Pulau Kembang or the monkey island, Pulau Kaget with its proboscis monkeys, the Grave of Pangeran Samundera and the schooners at Palabuhan. Nearby Banjarmasin are the Martapura and the Cempaka diamond fields. The towns is also a starting point for the Tanjung Puting National Park, which was founded by Dr. Binute Galdikas. It is home to the well known Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre.

Banjarmasin's Symasudin Noor Airport is outside the town. Several flights from other parts of Indonesia arrive regularly at Banjarmasin. Taxis to the hotel can be hired from the airport. Some hotels can also offer a pickup service. There may be some public transport, such as bemos at certain times of the day.

Weather and Best Time to Travel

Best time to travel to Banjarmasin, like everywhgere else in Kalimantan is usually during the dry season. However transport on the rivers can be difficult during the dryest months.
