Samarinda is the capial of Kaltim or East Kalimantan in the Indonesian part of Borneo. It is a gateway to several unique wildlife, nature and cultural attractions in Kalimantan. Key attractions and sights in and near Samarinda include a trip on the Mahakam river, the harbour with its Bugi schooners, Kampong Sulili a type of river village and the market, which usually takes place in the morning. Samarinda is also the gateway to the Kutai National Park, a unique forest home to rare birds and home to some of Borneo's last wild orang utans.

Getting there is either by plane, car hire, taxi or local bus. Samarinda's airport is just outside the town. Taxis to the hotel can be hired from the airport. Some hotels can also offer a pickup service. There may be public transport at certain times of the day.

Weather and Best Time to Travel

Best time to travel to Samarinda, like everywhgere else in Kalimantan is usually during the dry season. However tranbsport on the rivers can be difficult during the dryest months.
