Endangered Species in Sabah, Sarawak, and Kalimantan

Borneo orang utan Borneo is home to many unique endangered species. The orang utan, probably its most famous endangered animal, is native to Sabah, Sarawak, Kalimantan. The proboscis monkey, Borneo rhino, pygmy elephant, Bornean red carnivore, Borneo bay cat can also be found on the IUCN Red List of endangered species. Several new conservation and preservation projects and animal sanctuaries or rehabilitation centres have recently been set up to increase their survival rate. NGO's and other volunteer organisations have also established field conservation projects, research and rehabilitation centres in support of the cause.


Borneo is also home to a huge number of different plant species, many of them having unique medical properties, including several endangered plants. Substances from trees and shrubs are said to be effective against AIDS, malaria, cancer and tuberculosis (WWF).

Borneo Rhino

Only recently an image of the elusive Borneo rhino was caught on camera in the jungle of Borneo.

Pygmy Elephant

The Pygmy Elephant is a smaller and less aggressive elephant compared to other elephants in Asia. There may only be less than 1000 elephants remaining which makes them the most endangered elephant.

Banded Langur

The Banded Langur is a tiny leaf monkey, weighing only around 5-7 kg and around less than 60 cm in length, which can only be found in Sarawak. They live primarily in low land and hill forests, such as Tanjung Datu and Maludam.
