Towns

Kota Kinabalu "KK"

KK will be the most likely place to arrive in Sabah. Most headquarters of the major national parks are located in KK and if you visit some of the national parks and you would like to stay overnight you may have to show an overnight permit issued by them.

Much of the information you may receive from the local tourist office.

Most tour operators also have their headquarters in KK and in order to book a trip you will need to visit their head office.

KK is a place with a lot of character, although perhaps not in the most traditional way. There are several tourist attractions, several very good hotels, very good restaurants and good shopping facilities including a big market at the weekend.

Kota Belud

It is located in very nice surroundings, however the town itself has lost some of its attraction. It is rather difficult to find accommodation. About the only place to stay seems to be the government guesthouse which is  out of town. It has very nice views. Kota Belud has very few restaurants. However the town is home to a good market.

Kudat

Kudat is at the very Northern end of Sabah and not visited by many tourists. It has however very interesting traditional "Longhouses" nearby.

This town is a very interesting place. It is very close to the Philippines and as a result of that it has become home to many immigrants. It used to have a very high crime rate which is said to have come down recently
