Indigenous Communities Digitally Mapping Borneo's Rainforests
How smartphones and local knowledge are creating a new approach to biodiversity monitoring and rainforest conservation.
Deep in the rainforests of West Kalimantan, Indigenous communities are combining traditional ecological knowledge with digital technology to document the wildlife and ecosystems surrounding their villages.
The KehatiKu programme, developed by Borneo Futures, uses a purpose-built smartphone application and digital dashboard to collect biodiversity observations directly from local residents.
The initiative reports approximately 800 community observers across nine villages, contributing around 300,000 wildlife observations. These figures are reported by the project itself.
Unlike conventional biodiversity surveys conducted primarily by visiting researchers, KehatiKu places local communities at the centre of environmental data collection.
Residents can record wildlife sightings and ecological information, building a continuously expanding picture of their forests. Their familiarity with local habitats, seasonal changes and animal behaviour provides knowledge that occasional scientific expeditions may overlook.
The resulting information could support conservation planning, biodiversity research and the monitoring of environmental changes.
There are also potential economic opportunities. Community-based monitoring could create skilled local roles, support conservation employment and strengthen nature-based tourism, particularly where visitors seek authentic rainforest experiences guided by knowledgeable residents.
The wider significance extends beyond technology. KehatiKu demonstrates how Indigenous knowledge and modern digital tools can complement one another, potentially giving local communities a stronger role in understanding, managing and protecting Borneo’s extraordinary biodiversity.
