Sarawak's Ambitious New Cruise and Marina Destination

Could a new waterfront development near Kuching establish Sarawak as an international cruise destination and open opportunities for yachting and marine tourism?

Sarawak is planning a major transformation of the Damai Peninsula, approximately 35 kilometres from Kuching, combining international cruise facilities, a marina, luxury accommodation and new waterfront attractions.

At the centre of the development is a proposed cruise terminal capable of accommodating vessels carrying up to 6,000 passengers. The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is undertaking feasibility studies, with the wider development extending towards 2030.

The Damai masterplan also outlines a 180-berth marina, a marina clubhouse, hotels, serviced apartments, restaurants and recreational facilities. Improvements to road connections are intended to make the peninsula more accessible.

Situated beneath Mount Santubong, Damai already offers beaches, rainforest experiences and the Sarawak Cultural Village. The proposed development could create a new gateway for visitors arriving by sea.

However, the opportunities extend beyond large cruise ships.

A modern marina could attract privately owned yachts, charter operators and smaller expedition vessels exploring Borneo’s coastline. Marine services, maintenance facilities, provisioning and specialist excursions could generate additional business.

The challenge will be developing sufficient infrastructure and attractive itineraries to encourage vessels to include Sarawak in their cruising routes.

Environmental considerations are equally important. The peninsula’s rainforest, coastal ecosystems and cultural heritage are among its greatest attractions.

If successfully realised, Damai could become more than another cruise terminal. It could establish Sarawak as a new destination for international cruising, yachting and maritime tourism.
