The Rainforest That Listens: Drones and Sensors Reveal Borneo's Hidden Wildlife
Thermal imaging, acoustic monitoring and intelligent sensors are opening a new window into the lives of Borneo’s rainforest animals.
In Sabah’s Kinabatangan rainforest, an innovative research programme is using advanced monitoring technology to understand how wildlife moves through increasingly fragmented forest landscapes.
Led by conservation organisation HUTAN in collaboration with Chester Zoo, the three-year initiative combines thermal-imaging drones, acoustic recorders and camera traps to observe orangutans, Bornean elephants and other species.
Thermal drones detect heat signatures, helping researchers locate animals that can be difficult to see beneath dense vegetation. Acoustic monitoring stations record sounds from the forest, potentially revealing animal activity and biodiversity patterns over extended periods. Camera traps provide additional evidence of species presence and movement.
Together, these technologies offer a more detailed understanding of how wildlife uses forest corridors connecting isolated habitats.
This matters because not all reforestation projects deliver the same ecological benefits. A corridor may look promising on a satellite map but prove ineffective if animals rarely use it.
By combining different sources of environmental data, researchers can identify important movement routes, investigate barriers and assess whether restored habitats are functioning as intended.
The technology could also transform wildlife conservation tourism. Better knowledge of animal movements may help protect sensitive habitats while informing responsible visitor management.
The real innovation is not simply observing wildlife remotely, but using that information to determine where rainforest restoration can make the greatest difference.
