Can Technology Stop Borneo's Forest Fires Before They Start?
AI forecasting, satellite monitoring, intelligent sensors and new firefighting materials are changing how tropical forest fires could be prevented.
Borneo’s forest fires remain a serious environmental challenge, particularly in drained peatlands where fires can smoulder underground for weeks. Increasingly, researchers are shifting attention from extinguishing fires to predicting and preventing them.
AI-powered early warning is one of the most promising developments. In Sarawak’s Kuala Baram, researchers have deployed an intelligent monitoring system combining environmental sensors, weather information and predictive algorithms. The system can issue alerts to authorities and nearby Iban longhouse communities when fire conditions become dangerous.
Satellite technology is advancing too. Researchers are combining thermal imagery, rainfall data, groundwater measurements and machine learning to identify vulnerable areas before fires spread.
In Central Kalimantan, monitoring across extensive peatland landscapes is helping scientists understand a critical factor: water levels. Keeping peat sufficiently wet can prevent underground combustion, while canal-blocking projects are being evaluated for their effectiveness.
New firefighting materials are also emerging. Indonesia’s research agency BRIN is testing a cassava-based fire retardant designed to suppress persistent underground peat fires more effectively than water alone.
However, technology cannot solve the problem independently. Drainage, land management, agricultural burning and enforcement remain fundamental challenges.
The next breakthrough may come from integrating AI forecasts, satellite surveillance, groundwater sensors and community-led prevention into a coordinated system.
For Borneo, the greatest innovation could be preventing a forest fire before the first flames appear.
