Retiring in Borneo: Three Countries, Three Different Paths

Rainforests, tropical coastlines and a slower pace of life make Borneo an intriguing retirement destination. But where is it easiest for foreigners to settle?

Borneo is shared by Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, each offering a different lifestyle and immigration framework. Choosing where to retire involves more than finding an attractive location: residency rights, healthcare, housing and financial requirements are equally important.

Malaysia: The most accessible option

Sabah and Sarawak offer modern healthcare, established cities and relatively good infrastructure. Malaysia’s My Second Home (MM2H) programmes provide structured routes to long-term residence.

Sarawak operates its own programme, with financial requirements and a minimum annual stay. Sabah also has separate arrangements. Both deserve comparison with Malaysia’s national MM2H programme, which includes substantial deposit and property-purchase requirements.

Indonesia: Greater adventure, more complexity

Indonesian Kalimantan offers extraordinary landscapes, emerging cities and potentially lower living costs. Indonesia provides retirement-related and second-home residence options, although eligibility, financial commitments and immigration procedures require careful consideration. Healthcare and infrastructure vary considerably between locations.

Brunei: Comfortable but restrictive

Brunei offers security, modern infrastructure and a peaceful environment. However, it does not offer a widely accessible retirement-residency programme comparable to Malaysia’s MM2H schemes. Long-term settlement can therefore be considerably more difficult.

Which is easiest?

For most international retirees, Malaysian Borneo offers the clearest starting point, particularly Sarawak and Sabah.

Nevertheless, retirement in Borneo is not simply a lifestyle decision. Immigration rules can change, and prospective residents should verify current requirements before committing to property or relocation.
